Responsibilities
As a research assistant you will contribute to the ERC project ‘Patristic Sermons in the Middle Ages. The dissemination, manipulation, and interpretation of late-antique sermons in the medieval Latin West (PASSIM)’ and the VENI project ‘On the trail of Alanus of Farfa. Tracing the formation of Augustine’s authority in medieval sermon collections for the liturgy’.
These projects involve the creation of a database, containing fully searchable metadata on medieval manuscripts that transmit late-antique sermons. You will work under the supervision and direction of the researcher leading these projects. Your primary activities will include:
compiling a corpus of manuscripts containing patristic sermon collections, as well as a relevant bibliography;
searching through printed catalogues and online databases for relevant data on manuscripts;
transcribing the data and entering them into the project database;
contributing to the conceptual design of the database;
communicating with libraries and coordinating automated data input from existing databases.
You will furthermore assist in the organisation of scholarly meetings related to the project, contribute to these meetings. You will be expected to be an integral member of the project team and its international network.
Work environment
The Faculty of Arts employs a staff of more than 500 in teaching and research in the fields of history and art, languages and cultures, linguistics and information and communications technology (ICT). The faculty has two research institutes: the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) and the Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (HLCS). The faculty provides degree courses for approximately 2,400 students across three departments in the fields of history and art, languages and cultures, linguistics and ICT.
What we expect from you
excellent knowledge of Latin;
experience with manuscript studies, codicology, Latin palaeography;
excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of French, Italian and/or German is desirable;
experience with manuscript catalogues is a plus;
excellent communication and social skills;
organisational skills and accuracy;
basic knowledge of programming and database design, or a willingness to acquire such knowledge;
willingness to travel for short field trips to archives and libraries in Europe.
What we have to offer
employment: 0.5 FTE;
salary depends on knowledge and experience and will be between €2,514 and €3,358 per month on the basis of a 38-hour working week (scale 8);
in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
term of contact: 1 year, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 4 years;
classification in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO): Education/Research Officer, Level 3;
